Huygens’s principle also applies to sound waves. During the day, the temperature of the atmosphere decreases with increasing altitude above the ground. But at night, when the ground cools, there is a layer of air just above the surface in which the temperature increases with altitude. Use this to explain why sound waves from distant sources can be heard more clearly at night than in the daytime. (Hint: The speed of sound increases with increasing temperature. Use the ideas displayed in Fig. 33.37 for light.)

We define the index of refraction of a material for sound waves to be the ratio of the speed of sound in air to the speed of sound in the material. When the sun is either rising or setting and appears to be just on the horizon, it is in fact below the horizon. The explanation for this seeming paradox is that light from the sun bends slightly when entering the earth’s atmosphere, as shown in Fig. P33.55. Since our perception is based on the idea that light travels in straight lines, we perceive the light to be coming from an apparent position that is an angle \(\delta\) above the sun’s true position.
