QUESTION:

In the periodic table, the element hydrogen is sometimes grouped with the alkali metals (as in this book) and sometimes with the halogens. Explain why hydrogen can resemble the Group 1A and the Group 7A elements.

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 2

Hydrogen atomic number -1

Electronic configuration -  \(1s^1\)

Sometimes hydrogen lose the one electron from their subshell like alkali metal and form \(1s^0(nS^0)\) electronic configuration.

This electronic configuration of hydrogen resembles to 1A.

And sometimes gain electron like noble gas  and form \(1s^2\) or  \(ns^2\) electronic configuration.

This electronic configuration of hydrogen resembles to 7A group or noble gas configuration.
