Questions & Answers

QUESTION:

Determine the maximum deflection of the beam and the slope at A. EI is constant.

ANSWER:

Step  1 of 4

The reaction forces at the supports A, B are redundant and the internal shear is zero everywhere. The internal moment is only uniformly not the applied moments  the slope must be initially (and ultimately) uniform on A to B. It varies linearly in the intermediate region.It is necessary to consider the elastic curve over the intermediate region only, defined in terms of a horizontal coordinate; , with origin at the point of positive acting moment; .

Use the 'slope and displacement by integration method' to derive first the slope then the elastic curve equation. From the moment-curvature relation; Eq 12-10;
