The beam and column arrangement is used in a railroad yard

Chapter 13, Problem 13-90

(choose chapter or problem)

The beam and column arrangement is used in a railroad yard for loading and unloading cars. If the maximum anticipated hoist load is 12 kip, determine if the W8 X 31 wide-lange A-36 steel column is adequate for supporting the load. The hoist travels along the bottom lange of the beam, 1 ft ≤ x ≤ 25 ft, and has negligible size. Assume the beam is pinned to the column at B and pin supported at A. The column is also pinned at C and it is braced so it will not buckle out of the plane of the loading.
