QUESTION:

Problem 27CQ

Can you cool a kitchen by leaving the refrigerator door open?

ANSWER:

Solution  27CQ

Step 1 of 2

If the refrigerator of a kitchen is kept open, the refrigerator will try to include the whole room as a part of the system. However, the heat taken from the system is released to the surroundings, which originally for a refrigerator is the room in which it is placed in.

Hence when the refrigerator is kept open in the room, the device will take heat from the room and deliver it back to the room. In effect, there will be no change in the temperature of the room even though the refrigerator will take a power input.
