QUESTION:
Problem 30CQ
Does a gas become more orderly when it liquefies? Does its entropy change? If so, does the entropy increase or decrease? Explain your answer.
ANSWER:Solution 30CQ
Step 1 of 2
In the state of a gas, the molecules posses a greater energy and hence move around much more easily than the ones in liquid state.
Thus a gaseous state will always have greater entropy associated to it compared to a liquid state.
When the gas is liquefies, molecules become closer together and hence reduces the overall movement in the system. This reduces the entropy of the system as the motion is restricted.
