Chapter 9 Problem 925C

Question

How do the efficiencies of the ideal Otto cycle and the Carnot cycle compare for the same temperature limits? Explain.

Solution

Step 1 of 2

In the Carnot cycle there are two isothermal processes and two isentropic processes whereas in the Otto cycle two constant volume processes and two isentropic processes.

The Otto cycle is not totally reversible, the ideal Otto cycle involves external irreversibilities, and thus it has a lower thermal efficiency.
