Carry out the following operations as if they were calculations of experimental results, and express each answer in the correct units with the correct number of significant figures: (a) 7.310 km 4 5.70 km (b) (3.26 3 1023 mg) 2 (7.88 3 1025 mg) (c) (4.02 3 106 dm) 1 (7.74 3 107 dm) (d) (7.8 m 2 0.34 m)/(1.15 s 1 0.82 s)

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 5

The non-place-holding digits in a reported measurement are called significant figures.

We apply general rules of significant figures.

     *     All nonzero digits are significant figures

     *     Interior zero i.e zero between two numbers are significant

     *     Trailing zero i.e zero after a decimal point are significant

     *     Leading zero i.e zero to the left of the first nonzero number is not significant. They only serve to locate the decimal point .

     *     Zero at the end of a number but before a decimal point is ambiguous and should be avoided by using scientific notation.
