Chapter 21 Problem 93GP

Question

(a) Referring to Problem 92 and the circuit in Figure 21–45, does the current supplied by the battery increase, decrease, or remain the same when the switch is closed?

(b) Choose the best explanation from among the following:

I. The current decreases because only two resistors can draw current from the battery when the switch is closed.

II. Closing the switch makes no difference to the current since the second resistor is still connected to the battery as before.

III. Closing the switch shorts out the second resistor, decreases the total resistance of the circuit, and increases the current.

Solution

Solution 93GP

Step 1 of 3

(a)

Referring to the problem, here we need to explain whether the current flowing through the battery increases, decreases or remains same when the switch is closed.

In the given case, when the switch is closed there will be two paths for the current to flow. One through the second resistor and the other through the third resistor directly. Since current follows least resistive path, when the switch is closed the current flows through second path due to which the second resistor becomes shorted.
