Chapter 20, Problem 20-15

(choose chapter or problem)

Measuring the approximate mass of an ion without using a standard can he accomplishedvia the following variant of the peak-matching technique described inProhlcm 20-14. The peak-matching technique is used to alternately cause the pionand the (P + I) + ions to reach the detector. It is assumed that the difference inmass hetween p+ and (P + I) - is due to a single 'JC replacing a 12Catom.(a) If the accelerating voltage for (P + 1)+ is laheled V, and that for P' is V"derive a relationship that relates the ratio V,W, to the mass of P'.(h) If V,W, = 0.987753, calculate the mass of the P+ ion.
