Chapter 7 Problem 22E

Question

The National Insurance Crime Bureau reports that Honda Accords, Honda Civics, and Toyota Camrys are the cars most frequently reported stolen, while Ford Tauruses, Pontiac Vibes, and Buick LeSabres are stolen least often. Is it reasonable to say that there’s a correlation between the type of car you own and the risk that it will be stolen?

Solution

Step 1 of 2

Correlation refers to a statistical relationship between two variables. In our case, these variables could be 'type of car' and 'risk of theft'.

Given the information, it might seem reasonable to suggest that certain types of cars, such as Honda Accords, Civics, and Camrys, are stolen more frequently than others like Ford Tauruses, Pontiac Vibes, and Buick LeSabres. So, one might say there is a correlation between the type of car and the risk of it being stolen, based on this data.
