QUESTION:
Each of the following processes caused the gas volume to double, as illustrated. For each process, state how the remaining gas variable changed or that it remained fixed:
(a) T doubles at fixed P.
(b) T and n are fixed.
ANSWER:
Step 1 of 10
According to Boyle’s law at constant temperature and constant mol of gas the volume of the gas changes according to its pressure, it means the pressure and volume of a gas at constant temperature are inversely proportional. In simple words, at constant temperature and constant mol of gas if the pressure of gas increases then the volume of gas decreases or if the pressure of gas decreases then the volume of gas increases automatically.
\(V\propto \frac{1}{P}\)
Here, \(P\) is the pressure of gas and \(V\) is the volume of gas.
In general, the volume of a gas at constant temperature with fixed amount (means number of moles of gas constant) is invariably proportional to the external pressure.
\(PV=\text{constant}\ [T,n\ \text{fixed}]\)
In other words we can say at constant temperature and constant amount the product of pressure and volume of any gas is always constant.
