QUESTION:

Identify each of the following compounds as a wax, triglyceride, phospholipid, steroid, prostaglandin, or terpene: (a) Stanozolol (b) Lycopene (c) Tristearin (d) Distearoyl lecithin (e) PGF2 (f) Pentadecyl octadecanoate

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 7

A wax is a high molecular weight ester constructed from a carboxylic acid and an alcohol. A triglyceride is a triester formed from glycerol and three long-chain carboxylic acids. A phospholipid is an ester derivative of phosphoric acid. A steroid is a tetracyclic ring system, consisting of three six-membered rings and one five-membered ring. A prostaglandin contains 20 total carbon atoms divided amongst a five-membered ring with two side chains. Finally, a terpene is a compound that can be built up from isoprene units; it will always contain a multiple of five carbon atoms. Four carbon atoms will be arranged in a straight line, with exactly one branch.
