Chapter 7 Problem 17P

Question

(II) A tennis ball of mass m = 0.060 kg and speed v = 25 m/s strikes a wall at a \(45^{\circ}\) angle and rebounds with the same speed at \(45^{\circ}\) (Fig. 7-32). What is the impulse (magnitude and direction) given to the ball?

Figure 7-32

Solution

Step 1 of 2

We have to find the magnitude and direction of the impulse given to the ball after it strikes a ball at a 45o and rebounds with same speed at 45o.

The impulse of the ball can be found by using the expression,

Where,

mass of the ball = 0.060 kg

 final velocity =  m/s

 initial velocity =

speed of the ball = 25 m/s
