Chapter 11 Problem 12P

Question

Problem 12P

A mass of 2.62 kg stretches a vertical spring 0.315 m. If the spring is stretched an additional 0.130 m and released, how long does it take to reach the (new) equilibrium position again?

Solution

Solution 12P

Step 1 of 3:

A mass m is attached to a string of force constant k. The stretched distance by the weight of the mass m is x. We are going to find the time required for the mass-spring system to attain the mean position if the mass is pulled again to a distance 0.13 m.

The mass of the block m = 2.62 kg

The acceleration due to gravity g = 9.8 m/s2

The displacement made by the weight of the mass x = 0.315 m

The additional distance stretched dx = 0.13 m
