Chapter 8 Problem 8DQ

Question

In Example 8.7 (Section 8.3), where the two gliders in Fig. 8.15 stick together after the collision, the collision is inelastic because \(K_{2}<K_{1}\) In Example 8.5 (Section 8.2), is the collision inelastic? Explain.

Solution

Solution to 8DQ

Step 1

The values here are taken from Example 8.5 section 2.

Mass of glider A, ma=0.5kg

Mass of glider B, mb=0.3kg

Initial velocity of Glider A, va=2m/s

Initial velocity fo glider B, vb=-2m/s

Final velocity of glider B, v’b=2m/s

Final velocity of glider A, v’a=-0.4m/s…………………………(As computed in the example)
