Chapter 7 Problem 16

Question

A hydroelectric power facility (see Figure \(7.38\)) converts the gravitational potential energy of water behind a dam to electric energy.

(a) What is the gravitational potential energy relative to the generators of a lake of volume \(50.0 \mathrm{~km}^{3}\) ( mass = \(5.00 \times 10^{13} \mathrm{~kg}\)) , given that the lake has an average height of \(40.0 \mathrm{~m}\) above the generators?

(b) Compare this with the energy stored in a \(9\)-megaton fusion bomb.

Solution

Solution 16PE

Step 1 of 4

In the given process, the gravitational potential energy of water stored in dam is converted into electrical energy.

Here in part (a) we need to calculate the gravitational potential energy with respect to the generators of a lake having volume  and mass  and lake has an average height of about from the generator. Also, in part(b) we need to compare this energy with the energy stored in 9 megaton fusion bomb.
