Chapter 21 Problem 9

Question

Problem 9CQ

If two household lightbulbs rated 60 W and 100 W are connected in series to household power, which will be brighter? Explain

Solution

Solution  9CQ

Two household light bulbs rated 60W and 100W are connected in series to household power supply of 220 v. Since the bulbs are in series therefore the current is same for the both bulb.

P = V2  / R

The resistance of the 60W bulb is calculated as,

Substitute 220 v.for V and 60W for P in equation,

P = V2  / R

R60  = 806.7 Ω

The resistance of the 100W  bulb is calculated as,

Substitute 220 v.for V and 100 W for P in equation,

P = V2  / R

R100  = 484Ω
Therefore, the total resistance is calculated as,

R = R60  + R100

Here,R60  is the resistance offered by the 60W bulb and R100 s the resistance offered by the 100W  bulb

Substitute 806.7 Ω for  R60
