Chapter 4 Problem 1E

Question

Load factors, 2013 The Research and Innovative Technology Administration of the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (www.TranStats.bts.gov /Data_Elements.aspx?Data=2) reports load factors (passenger-miles as a percentage of available seat-miles) for commercial airlines for every month from 2000 through September 2013. Here are histograms comparing the domestic and international load factors for this time period:

\(\begin{array}{|l|c|c|c|c|c|c|}
\hline & \text { Mean } & \text { Median } & \text { Std Dev } & \text { IQR } & \text { n } & \text { Missing } \\
\hline \text { Domestic } & 77.36715 & 78.02 & 6.45481 & 9.20 & 165 & 0 \\
\text { International } & 77.75976 & 77.98 & 5.22681 & 6.78 & 165 & 0 \\
\hline
\end{array}\)

Compare and contrast the distributions.

Solution

Step 1 of 2

Comparison:

Mean: As you can see from the histogram, for both domestic and international loads are more or less the same.

Mode: Both are unimodal.

Skewness: Both are skewed to the left.

Median: For both international and domestic, the median is also close.
