QUESTION:

Draw the major product(s) that are expected when each of the following amines is treated with excess methyl iodide and then heated in the presence of aqueous silver oxide. NH2 (a) NH2 (b)

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 3

In this two-part exercise, we’re asked to draw the major product(s) that are expected when various amines are treated with excess methyl iodide and then heated in the presence of aqueous silver oxide.

Amines can undergo a reaction called the Hofmann elimination. Since amines are usually good nucleophiles and methyl iodide is a very powerful electrophile, reaction between the two rapidly leads to a fully methylated (positively-charged) ammonium group. A mild base such as silver oxide in water can then promote an elimination reaction, using the positively-charged amine as a leaving group, forming an alkene.
