Chapter 5 Problem 5.40

Question

Consider a damped oscillator, with fixed natural frequency \(\omega_{\mathrm{o}}\) and fixed damping constant \(\beta\) (not too large), that is driven by a sinusoidal force with variable frequency \(\omega\). Show that the amplitude of the response, as given by (5.71) is maximum when \(\omega=\sqrt{\omega_{\mathrm{o}}^2-2\beta^2}\). (Note that so long as the resonance is narrow this implies \(\omega\approx\omega_{\mathrm{o}}\).)

Solution

Step 1 of 3
