Textbook Solutions for Conceptual Physics

Chapter 19 Problem 7P

Question

As shown in the drawing, the half-angle of the shock wave cone generated by a supersonic airplane is \(45^{\circ}\). What is the speed of the plane relative to the speed of sound?

Solution

Step 1 of 2

Consider the given data as follows.

The half-angle of the shock wave cone generated by a supersonic airplane is \(\theta  = 45^\circ \).

The ratio of the speed of the airplane to the speed of sound is defined as follows.

\(\frac{{{v_{airplane}}}}{{{v_{sound}}}} = \frac{1}{{\sin \theta }}\;\;\;\;\;...\;\left( 1 \right)\)

Here, \({v_{airplane}}\) is the speed of the airplane, and \({v_{sound}}\) is the speed of the sound.
