Chapter 2 Problem 65P

Question

Problem 65P

David is driving a steady 30 m/s when he passes Tina, who is sitting in her car at rest. Tina begins to accelerate at a steady 2.0 m/s2 at the instant when David passes.

a. How far does Tina drive before passing David?

b. What is her speed as she passes him?

Solution

Step 1 of 4

a.)

We have to find how far Tina drives before passing David.

Tina and David both travel the same distance before Tina passes David. Tina is accelerating from rest at a steady rate of    and David is driving at a steady speed of  30 m/s.

Distance traveled by Tina is given by the kinematic equation.
