Chapter 9 Problem 1Q

Question

Problem 1Q

Describe several situations in which an object is not in equilibrium, even though the net force on it is zero.

Solution

Step 1 of 2

For an object to be equilibrium the following condition must be satisfied.

The net force acting on the object must be zero.

The torque acting on the object must be zero.

When an object has zero net force acting on it but the resulting torque is nonzero, the object is not in equilibrium.
