Why is the thickness greater for the bass strings of a guitar than for the treble strings?

Bass refers to the lower end (lower frequency) of the human audio frequency spectrum, whereas treble is the upper end(higher frequency).
We know that in physics, the thicker the string is, the heavier it is ,causing it to vibrate more slowly resulting in generation of lower frequencies.
