Chapter 2 Problem 16P

Question

Problem 16P

What is vapor pressure? How is it related to saturation pressure?

Solution

Solution

Step 1

Vapour pressure is the pressure exerted by a vapour in thermodynamic equilibrium with its condensed phases (solid or liquid ) at a given temperature in a closed system. Or it can be defined as the force exerted by the gas or vapor released by a liquid or solid substance in a closed container.

Vapour pressure is the relative measure of the tendency to evaporate depends on the nature of the substance and the ambient temperature, and reach an equilibrium state in a closed space.
