Chapter 35, Problem 35.7

(choose chapter or problem)

The lens on a camera is usually a combination of two or more single lenses. Consider a camera in which light passes first through a diverging lens, with f1 = -120 mm, then a converging lens, with f2 = 42 mm, spaced 60 mm apart. A reasonable definition of the effective focal length of this lens combination is the focal length of a single lens that could produce an image in the same location if placed at the midpoint of the lens combination. A 10-cm-tall object is 500 mm from the first lens. a. What are the location, size, and orientation of the image? b. What is the effective focal length of the double-lens system used in this camera?
