Chapter 22 Problem 13P

Question

Problem 13P

An ion experiences a magnetic force of 6.2 × 10−16 N when moving in the positive × direction but no magnetic force when moving in the positive y direction. What is the magnitude of the magnetic force exerted on the ion when it moves in the x−y plane along the line × = y? Assume that the ion’s speed is the same in all cases.

Solution

Step 1 of 2:-

Here, we have to calculate the magnitude of the magnetic force on the charged particle.

When the particle is moving in +ve x direction, the magnetic force is,

.

When the particle is moving in +ve y direction, the magnetic force is zero.

This means that, the magnetic field is either parallel or antiparallel to y direction.

Let’s take it as parallel to +ve y direction, as we are considering the magnetic force magnitude only.
