Chapter 28 Problem 15P

Question

Problem 15P

CE A two-slit experiment with blue light produces a set of bright fringes. Will the spacing between the fringes increase, decrease, or stay the same if

(a) the separation of the slits is decreased, or

(b) the experiment is immersed in water?

Solution

Solution 15P

a)

Step 1 of 2

The equation for the maxima,

For small angle diffraction,

Where,  - Distance between the source and the screen

              - Distance of the mth bright fringe.

Therefore, we can write,

If the separation of the slits is decreased, spacing between the fringes will increase since it is inversely proportional.
