Chapter 4 Problem 37P

Question

Find Var(X) and Var(Y) for X and Y as given in Problem 4.21.

Solution

Step 1 of 2

Given that, the buses carry,  40, 33, 25, and 50 students and 4 buses carrying 148 students.

We need to find the variance of X and the variance of Y.

Now we have have to find the variance of X and the variance of Y.

The variance formula is

\(\operatorname{Var}(\mathrm{X})=\mathrm{E}\left(X^{2}\right)-(E(X))^{2}\)

First we have to calculate expectation of X.

\(\begin{array}{l}
E(X)=(40) \times \frac{40}{148}+(33) \times \frac{33}{148}+(25) \times \frac{25}{148}+(50) \times \frac{50}{148} \\
E(X)=\frac{160}{148}+\frac{1089}{148}+\frac{625}{148}+\frac{2500}{148} \\
E(X)=\frac{1600+1089+625+2500}{148} \\
E(X)=\frac{5814}{148} \\
E(X)=39.28
\end{array}\)

Therefore, \(\mathrm{E}(\mathrm{X})=39.28\)

Then the expectation of \(X^{2}\) is

\(\begin{array}{l}
E\left(X^{2}\right)=(40)^{2} \times \frac{40}{148}+(33)^{2} \times \frac{33}{148}+(25)^{2} \times \frac{25}{148}+(50)^{2} \times \frac{50}{148} \\
E\left(X^{2}\right)=(1600) \times \frac{40}{148}+(1089) \times \frac{33}{148}+(625) \times \frac{25}{148}+(2500) \times \frac{50}{148} \\
E\left(X^{2}\right)=\frac{64000}{148}+\frac{35937}{148}+\frac{15625}{148}+\frac{125000}{148} \\
E\left(X^{2}\right)=\frac{64000+35937+15625+125000}{148} \\
E\left(X^{2}\right)=\frac{240562}{148} \\
E\left(X^{2}\right)=1625.4189
\end{array}\)

Therefore, \(E\left(X^{2}\right)=1625.4189\).

Then variance of X is

\(\begin{array}{l}
\operatorname{Var}(\mathrm{X})=\mathrm{E}\left(X^{2}\right)-(E(X))^{2} \\
\operatorname{Var}(\mathrm{X})=1625.4189-(39.28)^{2} \\
\operatorname{Var}(\mathrm{X})=1625.4189-1543.2156 \\
\operatorname{Var}(\mathrm{X})=82.2023
\end{array}\)

Therefore, variance of X is 82.2023.
