Chapter 22 Problem 7P

Question

The potential difference between a storm cloud and the ground is 100 million V. If a charge of 2 C flashes in a bolt from cloud to Earth, what is the change of potential energy of the charge?

Solution

Solution 7P Step 1: Potential difference = Change in potential energy/ Charge Put, potential difference = V Change in potential energy = PE Charge = Q Therefore, we can write, V = PE/Q But, we know that, the electrostatic potential is the amount of work done to move a unit positive charge from infinity to a particular point. Therefore, we should put a negative sign in front of change in potential energy. Therefore, V = - (PE) / Q
