Chapter 3 Problem 73P

Question

Problem 73P

The two sides of a V-shaped water trough are hinged to each other at the bottom where they meet, as shown in Fig- P10-19, making an angle of 45° with the ground from both sides. Each side is 0.75 m wide, and the two parts are held together by a cable and turnbuckle placed every 6 m along? the length of the trough. Calculate the tension in each cable when the trough is filled to the rim.

Solution

Problem 73P

Solution 73P

Step 1 :

In this question, two parts of water trough of a triangular cross are held together by cables, which are places along the length

We need to find the tension when the trough is filled to the rim

Data given

Length of the water trough

Angle made on side of hinge

Length of cable

Density of water

Let us consider the given figure
