Chapter 2 Problem 4E

Question

Problem 4E

What Aristotelian idea did Galileo demolish with his experiments with inclined planes?

Solution

As we know very well about inertia, conservation of linear momentum and the role of forces now a days, it’s not a big deal for us to figure out problems related to these. But in the time of  Aristotle he did not know about all these things and struggled a lot. Still he had an intuition about these which was, to keep the things in constant motion a force is required.

This idea was taken by Galileo and he thought that if there would be no force on an object, then it’s motion will be completely unaffected. This was completely in disagreement with the idea of Aristotle. And as we know he is the father of experimental physics, he tried to show this by experiments.
