Question
Problem 4PE
Suppose you have a 120-kg wooden crate resting on a wood floor. (a) What maximum force can you exert horizontally on the crate without moving it? (b) If you continue to exert this force once the crate starts to slip, what will the magnitude of its acceleration then be?
Solution
Part (a)
Step 1 of 7:
Consider a wooden crate is resting on a wood floor. The wood floor gives frictional force if the crate is moved on the floor. Assume that the crate initially at rest. The mass of the crate (m) is 120.0 kg. We need to find the maximum horizontal force on the crate without moving it.
If we apply the horizontal force (F) of magnitude which is less than the static frictional force, the crate won’t move until it reaches the maximum value. Hence the maximum horizontal force to be applied must be equal to the static frictional force. Once it exceeds the maximum force the crate will start moving.
