Question
Problem 5PE
(a) If half of the weight of a small 1.00×103 kg utility truck is supported by its two drive wheels, what is the magnitude of the maximum acceleration it can achieve on dry concrete? (b) Will a metal cabinet lying on the wooden bed of the truck slip if it accelerates at this rate? (c) Solve both problems assuming the truck has four-wheel drive.
Solution
Solution to 5PE
Step 1 of 4
We need to find the value of the maximum acceleration that is achieved by a truck of certain mass is moving on the dry concrete and we are asked to check if the metal cabinet which is kept on the wooden bed will slip when the truck is moving in with this acceleration. For, the first part we have to calculate the acceleration while using the concept of friction. For the second part, the friction between the wooden floor of truck and the metal cabinet is considered.
A four -wheel drive means all the four wheels of the truck will be driven by the engine. Thus all four of the wheels will be accelerating equally and half of its weight is supported by the two wheels. For two wheel drive, the mas is supported by two wheels.
