Chapter 23 Problem 21

Question

Problem 21CQ

How would you shape a given length of wire to give it the greatest self-inductance? The least?

Solution

Solution 21CQ

In order to obtain the maximum value of self inductance from a given length of wire, the wire can be shaped into a coil, wound around a cylinder of minimum diameter, in a single sense. This would help in the coupling of the wire with itself and hence produce the maximum emf for a given change in current.
