Chapter 23 Problem 27

Question

Figure \(23.59\) A coil is moved into and out of a region of uniform magnetic field.

A coil is moved through a magnetic field as shown in Figure \(23.59\). The field is uniform inside the rectangle and zero outside. What is the direction of the induced current and what is the direction of the magnetic force on the coil at each position shown?

Solution

Problem 27PE

a.) The magnetic field is zero and not changing so there is no current and therefore no force on the coil.

b.)The magnetic field is increasing out of the page and from the Lenz’s law the direction of the induced magnetic field is into the page. The right hand rule says that this induced magnetic field was created by an induced clockwise current. Finally the right hand rule applied on the part of the loop exposed to a magnetic field that is in the right side says that this current creates a force to the left from relation,
