Chapter 9 Problem 60P

Question

Problem 60P

A 57.8-kg person holding two 0.880-kg bricks stands on a 2.10-kg skateboard. Initially, the skateboard and the person are at rest. The person now throws the two bricks at the same time so that their speed relative to the person is 17.0 m/s, What is the recoil speed of the person and the skateboard relative to the ground, assuming the skateboard moves without friction?

Solution

Step 1 of 3

A person standing on a skateboard holds two bricks having the same mass. The system is initially at rest. We are going to find the recoil speed of the person with the skateboard if he throws the bricks at the same time. The direction of the speed of the bricks is opposite to that of the direction of the person.

The mass of the person mp = 57.8 kg

The mass of the bricks mb = 2 x 0.88 kg = 1.76 kg

The mass of the skateboard ms = 2.10 kg

The speed of the bricks relative to the person vbp = -17.0 m/s
