Chapter 12 Problem 53P

Question

Problem 53P

Find the escape velocity for (a) Mercury and (b) Ventis.

Solution

a.)

Step 1 of 2

We have to find the escape velocity of Mercury.

The escape velocity() of Mercury can be found using the expression,

where,

Universal Gravitational constant

        = Nm2 / kg.2

Mass of Mercury =kg

  = Radius of Mercury = 2,400 km = m

Hence, the escape velocity() of Mercury is

        = 4,250 m/s

         = 4.25 km/s

Therefore, the escape velocity of Mercury is 4.25 km/s.
