QUESTION:

Problem 86GP

Show that the force of gravity between the Moon and the Sun is always greater than the force of gravity between the Moon and the Earth.

ANSWER:

Solution 86GP

Step 1az:

The gravitational force is the force of attraction between two heavenly bodies. This will be greater if the masses are very large. Now we are going to prove that the gravitational force between the Sun and the Moon is greater than that of the force between the Earth and the Moon.

The mass of Sun MS = 2 x 1030 kg

The mass of Earth ME = 6 x 1024 kg

The distance between the Sun and Earth RSE = 1.496 x 1011 m

The distance between the Moon and Earth REM = 3.844 x 108 m
