Chapter 19 Problem 86GP

Question

Problem 86GP

IP Consider the system of three point charges described in the previous problem, (a) The electric field vanishes at two different points on the.x axis. One point is between x = 0.20 m and x = 0.40 m. Is the second point located to the left of charge 1 or to the right of charge 3? Explain, (b) Find the value of x at the second point where E = 0.

Solution

Solution 86GP

Step 1 of 3

(a)

Here we need need to choose the region where the electric field vanishes other than the point in between three charges. Either on the left of the charge 1 or to the right of the charge 3 in the given charge configuration.

In the given charge configuration, the electric field can be zero only to the left of charge 1. To the left of charge 1, the electric field due to charge will be stronger and the weak electric fields due to charges and adds up to cancel the stronger electric field.

Therefore, the zero field point lies to the left of the charge  in the given charge configuration.
