Chapter 5 Problem 45TAE

Question

Consider the two forces acting on the person who stands still—namely, the downward pull of gravity and the upward support of the floor. Are these forces equal and opposite? Do they form an action– reaction pair? Why or why not?

Solution

Step 1 of 2

In the case of a person who is standing at rest, the earth is pulling him downward (action force) and as a reaction force there will be a pull on the earth by the person.

And there is a second pair of forces, the action force by the person on the floor and the reaction force of the floor on the person.
