Chapter 3 Problem 64GP

Question

At serve, a tennis player aims to hit the ball horizontally. What minimum speed is required for the ball to clear the 0.90-m-high net about 15.0 m from the server if the ball is “launched” from a height of 2.50 m? Where will the ball land if it just clears the net (and will it be “good” in the sense that it lands within 7.0 m of the net)? How long will it be in the air? See Fig. 3–45.

Solution

Solution 64GP

Step 1 of 6:

A tennis player has to hit the ball so that it should clear the net has a height 0.9 m at a distance 15 m. We are going to find the minimum speed required for the ball to clear the height, the total time of flight of the ball till it lands and the total horizontal distance.

The initial vertical height yo = 2.5 m

The final vertical height at the net y = 0.9 m

The horizontal distance up to the net Δx = 15.0 m

The acceleration due to gravity g = 9.8 m/s2
