Chapter 2 Problem 2-71

Question

Specify the magnitude and coordinate direction angles \(\alpha_1\), \(beta_1\), \(gamma_1\) of \(F_1\) so that the resultant of the three forces acting on the bracket is \(FR = \{-350k\}\ lb\). Note that \(F_3\) lies in the x–y plane.

Solution

Step 1 of 6

In this problem,we are given a system of forces in 3 dimensions. Our goal is to solve for the magnitude and direction of the force  in which the sum of the three forces .Refer to the figure given below given in question.

Step  2 of 6

We can solve this problem by expressing all the forces in their vector form and using Equation (I).

....(1)

In addition, the direction of  can be solved by taking the direction cosines of the vector.

....(2)

.....(3)

....(4)

Step  3 of 6

Let's begin by expressing the forces in vector notation.
