Chapter 3 Problem 1

Question

Which of the following is a vector: a person’s height, the altitude on Mt. Everest, the age of the Earth, the boiling point of water, the cost of this book, the Earth’s population, the acceleration of gravity?

Solution

Step 1 of 8

We need to comment whether the following are vectors or not. We know that the vectors are quantities which have both the magnitude and direction. Example of a vector is taken as a body moving with a speed of 20 m/s in the north direction. In this case, the value 20 m/s is the vector magnitude and North is its direction. In the following cases, we will check if the quantities have both direction and magnitude to be qualified as a vector.
