Chapter 6 Problem 58E

Question

Problem 58E

Suppose the National Hurricane Center forecasts that hurricanes will hit the strike area with a .95 probability. Answer the following questions:

a. What probability distribution does this follow?

b. What is the probability that 10 hurricanes reach landfall in the strike area?

c. What is the probability at least one of 10 hurricanes reaches land outside the strike area?

Solution

Solution :

Step 1 of 3:

From the given information we know that  the National Hurricane Center forecasts that hurricanes will hit the strike area with a .95 probability.

So p=0.95.

Our goal is:

a). We need to find what probability distribution does this follow.

b). We need to find the probability that 10 hurricanes reach landfall.

c). We need to find the probability at least one of the 10 hurricanes reaches land.

a). It follows the binomial probability distribution.

Then the binomial distribution with parameter n, p.

Where n=10, and p=0.95.
