Chapter 16 Problem 42E

Question

A number of bodies at different temperatures placed in a closed room share radiant energy and ultimately reach a common temperature. Would this thermal equilibrium be possible if good absorbers were poor emitters and poor absorbers were good emitters? Explain.

Solution

Solution 42E Step 1 of 2 : No, it is not possible to achieve thermal equilibrium if good absorbers were poor emitters and poor absorbers were good emitters. Thermal equilibrium of a system of particles is the state in which there is no flow of heat inside the system between the particles, so that the temperature remains constant throughout the system.
