Problem 1P

How much work is done by the gravitational force when a 265-kg pile driver falls 2.80 m?

Step-by-Step Solution:
Step 1 of 3

STD/ Venereal  About a dozen STD’s- we will only talk about 4 o Gonorrhea- caused by a bacteria  Symptoms appear 3-14 days after sex  Symptoms are obvious in the male  Male- discharge from penis and painful urination  Treated with large amounts of penicillin- but resistant strains are common o Syphilis- caused by bacteria  Several Stages  Primary stage- 3 weeks after sex hard painful sore develops on genitals- disappears after a short time- no more symptoms for 2-4 months  Secondary stage- skin rash and infection of organs- may then enter a latent period- which lasts through life  Tertiary stage- severe nervous and circulatory system damage and even death  Treated with penicillin o Herpes- caused by a virus  1 in 6 sexually active people have genital herpes  Herpes is caused by two different viruses  Herpes simplex virus I- cold sores on lips  HSV II- painful ulcers on genitals o Symptoms usually appear 2-20 days after sex o Painful ulcers may persist for 1-3 weeks then go away  Virus can stay in the nerve cell while dormant***  Type 1 can cause blindness  Type 2 can cause meningitis o Sunlight, sex, menstruation and stress seem to cause the painful ulcers to reoccur o Although it is not curable the ointment helps relieve the symptoms o New form that prevents outbreaks in 70% of people o AIDS- Acquired immune deficiency syndrome  Cause- human T-cell lymph trophic virus group III (HTLV)  The virus interferes with T-helper lymphocytes  Involved with the immune system’s response to infections and cancers- cause immune system to crash  Symptoms- infections such as: pneumonia and meningitis and certain cancers o Karposi’s Sarcoma  Incubation period is highly variable- no symptoms- HIV+  Once symptoms appear you have AIDS- often resulting in death  Must get in the blood- can be passed from mother to child during birth  No known cure or vaccination to date
