Chapter 25 Problem 20P

Question

Problem 20P

(a) How fast would a motorist have to be traveling for a yellow (λ = 590 nm) traffic light to appear green (λ = 550 nm) because of the Doppler shift? (b) Should the motorist be traveling toward or away from the traffic light to see this effect? Explain.

Solution

Step 1 of 6

As a motorist approaches a yellow signal light, the motorist sees the light Doppler shifted to green.Use equation 25-4 to calculate the two frequencies from the wavelengths, and then insert the frequencies into equation 25-3 to solve for the speed.
