Why does a penny become warmer when it is struck by a hammer?

Solution Step 1 of 1 Kinetic energy is the energy possessed by a body due to virtue of its motion. Therefore, there exist certain amount of kinetic energy when we swing the hammer. When such a swing in hammer is struck on the penny, the kinetic energy in the swing is transferred onto the penny.
